Biography

LL.B - University of British Columbia, 2008

 

Martin Sheard is a four-year call to the British Columbia Bar. He has spent his entire career focusing on employment law, and has worked with TevlinGleadle throughout that time. Prior to his call to the Bar, Martin articled at a large corporate law firm.

Martin has conducted numerous applications and trials in front of the British Columbia Supreme Court. He has never lost a trial in the field of employment law. The following is a list of some of Martin's cases in recent years:

  • Winning counsel in a trial where a senior manager sued a large hospitality company for wrongful dismissal
  • Conduct of every aspect of a case in which an executive vice-president sued a publicly traded corporation for wrongful dismissal
  • Sole conduct of an action in which an executive director sued a business enhancement collective for wrongful dismissal
  • Conduct of every aspect of a case in which the second highest ranking employee in a nation-wide engineering firm sued that firm for constructive dismissal
  • Handling every element of a case in which a senior manager sued a large construction company for constructive dismissal

 

Martin also has experience in front of the Court of Appeal as well as various employment and human rights tribunals.

Various news media consult Martin from time to time as an expert on employment law topics. He has been quoted in the Vancouver Sun and appeared on various radio programs including the nationally-broadcast Charles Adler Show.

Martin is quick to point out that for each of his court appearances, he has settled many more files privately through negotiation and/or mediation. This speaks to Martin's ability to find practical, financially viable solutions to a wide variety of client problems.

Throughout his law school career, Martin dedicated himself to pro bono legal work. As a result, he has represented clients in both civil and criminal proceedings in provincial courts. As a student, Martin distinguished himself during the annual University of British Columbia Mediation Moot. He is an avid rugby player, and won several awards as a member of the University of British Columbia's law school rugby team. Martin maintains an interest in languages, he can speak French and basic Mandarin.
