Chris was called to the bar in British Columbia in 1996 and has spent his career focusing on employment law. Chris has appeared before all levels of Court in British Columbia including the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal and Federal Court. He has acted in Employment Standards Act complaints including appeals to the Employment Standards Tribunal, Human Rights Code complaints and Employment Insurance adjudications. Chris acts for both employers and employees and has advised clients and resolved disputes involving corporate restructuring, compliance with various employment regulatory regimes, use of confidential information by departing employees, fiduciary duties of Directors and senior officers, sexual harassment and discrimination, constructive dismissal, dismissal for cause and severance issues including complex commission and bonus schemes. Chris' finds creative and cost effective methods to resolve disputes quickly. Most plaintiffs cannot afford a five day trial a year or more after they have been dismissed. Most employers would rather get on with their business rather than devoting their resources to protracted litigation. Chris looks for ways to get disputes resolved quickly through mediation, arbitration and early use of the summary trial methods available in the Supreme Court. Early intervention often leads to early settlements rather than waiting for the "Courthouse steps". The vast majority of Chris's cases are resolved through negotiated settlement. While Chris has focused his legal career on one area - employment law, his outside endeavors are more varied. He has achieved a level of mediocrity as a windsurfer, snowboarder, mountain biker and skier and has consequently fallen down most local mountains in both summer and winter. |
